What to Expect When Getting Dental Impressions

Posted on 3/22/2021 by Dick Hikade, DDS
What to Expect When Getting Dental ImpressionsEvery dentist takes dental impressions before introducing a patient's teeth to any foreign object. This process is carried out to make sure that the new bridge or crown aligns well with the patient's current bite. The mold created by the impressions is an exact replica of the patient's mouth so that the repair doesn't irritate cheek or gum tissues and feels completely natural.

At Sunnyside Dentistry, Dick Hikade, DDS and Brooke Hikade-Wyatt, DMD can diagnose your issue and provide you with the results you desire. Here is what to expect when getting dental impressions:

Making Dental Impressions

When a dentist makes an impression, they often file the sides and top of the affected tooth to achieve a great fit. Remember that the filling may cause slight discomfort, especially if the tooth can't accept a crown unless it is filled. After the tooth is prepared, an alginate dental impression is taken of the area that requires crowning.

The impression is then removed, and once it hardens and forms a thorough impression of the patient's mouth, the final crown material is poured into it. This results in the creation of an exact fit for the patient's affected tooth. Dental impressions are often quick and painless since all the dentist does is place the material over your tooth and removes it!

Minor Inconveniences

The process of taking a dental impression only lasts a few minutes. The only two minor issues you may experience are having a gag reflex and the unpleasant taste of the alginate material. If your gag reflex is triggered during the process, try asking the dentist if you can sit up straight or breathing through your nose. These measures might contribute to your comfort. In addition, remember that the natural flavor of the material only lasts while the impression is being taken.

We strive to create healthier teeth and provide a repaired and happier smile to patients. To schedule an appointment, call us at (503) 451-5104.
