What Things Do Not Count as Dental Emergencies?

Posted on 11/3/2025 by Sunnyside Dentistry
It's important to know when you need to rush to the dentist and when you can wait for a regular appointment. Sometimes, it's hard to tell the difference! Let's talk about some common situations that people think are dental emergencies, but usually aren't. Knowing the difference can save you stress and a potentially unnecessary trip to the dentist's office.

Minor Tooth Sensitivity

Experiencing a twinge of sensitivity when you eat something cold or sweet is common. It can be annoying, but it's usually not an emergency. Often, sensitivity indicates minor enamel wear or a small area of gum recession exposing the root surface.

What to do: Try using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. If the sensitivity persists or worsens, schedule a regular appointment to discuss potential causes and treatments with your dentist.

A Lost Filling or Crown (Without Pain)

A lost filling or crown can feel alarming, especially if it happens unexpectedly. However, if you aren't experiencing significant pain, it's generally not considered an emergency.

What to do: Keep the area clean by brushing gently. You can buy temporary filling material from a drugstore to protect the exposed tooth. Schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible to get a permanent restoration. Delaying treatment for too long can lead to further damage or pain, so don't put it off indefinitely. This relates to restoration dentistry.

A Small Chip or Crack (Without Pain)

Discovering a small chip or crack in your tooth can be unsettling. As long as the chip or crack isn't causing significant pain, sensitivity, or sharp edges that irritate your tongue or cheek, it's likely not an emergency.

What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there are sharp edges, you can try covering them with dental wax (available at most drugstores). Schedule a regular appointment to have the chip or crack evaluated and repaired.

Dull Toothache

A dull, nagging toothache can be uncomfortable, but it doesn't always require immediate attention.

What to do: Try over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If the pain is accompanied by swelling, fever, or difficulty breathing, it could indicate a more serious infection and requires immediate medical attention. Otherwise, schedule an appointment to determine the cause of the ache.

Food Stuck Between Teeth

Having food stuck between your teeth can be irritating, but it's rarely an emergency.

What to do: Gently try to remove the food with dental floss. Avoid using sharp objects that could damage your gums. If you can't remove the food yourself, contact your dentist's office for guidance. Good oral care techniques can help prevent food impaction.

When Is It a Dental Emergency?

So, what does count as a dental emergency? Generally, it involves severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, trauma to the face or mouth, or a serious infection. These situations require immediate attention to prevent further complications.

Prioritizing Preventative Care

The best way to avoid needing emergency dental care is to practice good oral care habits and schedule regular checkups. Consistent brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings can help prevent many dental problems from developing in the first place. If you're unsure about a particular situation, it's always best to err on the side of caution and contact your dentist's office for advice.
