Keep Cavity Pain Under Control Until You Can Visit the Dentist

Posted on 8/1/2025 by Sunnyside Dentistry
A toothache can be a real pain, literally! It can make it difficult to eat, sleep, and concentrate. If your toothache is caused by a cavity, you'll need to see a dentist as soon as possible to have the cavity treated. But what can you do in the meantime to manage the pain?

In this post, we will discuss some tips on how to keep cavity pain under control until you can see a dentist.

What is a Cavity?

A cavity is a hole in your tooth that is caused by tooth decay. Tooth decay happens when the bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars and starches from the foods you eat. These bacteria produce acid, which can erode the enamel, which is the hard outer layer of your teeth.

If the decay is not treated, it can spread to the inner layer of your tooth, called the dentin. The dentin contains nerves, so when it is infected, it can cause pain.

Possible Causes of Cavity Pain

There are many possible causes of cavity pain, but some of the most common include:
•  Eating or drinking something sweet or hot.
•  Biting down on something hard.
•  Having a cold or sinus infection.
•  Brushing your teeth too hard.

What to Do If You Have a Toothache

If you have a toothache, the first thing you should do is call your dentist. They will be able to determine the cause of your toothache and recommend the best treatment.

In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to manage the pain:
•  Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be helpful in reducing pain.
•  Apply a cold compress to the affected area. This will help to reduce inflammation and swelling.
•  Avoid eating or drinking anything that is too hot, too cold, or too sweet.
•  Brush and floss your teeth gently.
•  Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. This will help to kill bacteria.

If your toothache is severe, you may need to go to the emergency room.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

The best way to avoid cavity pain is to take steps to prevent tooth decay. Here are some tips for good oral care:
•  Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
•  Floss your teeth once a day.
•  Eat a healthy diet that is low in sugar.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
•  Ask your dentist about dental sealants, which are thin, protective coatings that can be placed on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth.

By following these tips, you can help keep your teeth healthy and avoid cavity pain.
