What Is Dental Wax, and How Do I Apply It?

Posted on 6/15/2024 by Sunnyside Dentistry
Black woman smiling in dental chair at Sunnyside Dentistry in Clackamas, OROrthodontic wax, or dental wax, is a special type of wax used to ease discomfort caused by braces. When the wires or brackets of the braces rub against the sensitive tissues inside your mouth, the wax is applied to create a protective barrier. This barrier prevents the wires and brackets from irritating your mouth further and gives your sores time to heal.

Importance of Wax for Your Braces

If you are just starting with braces, dental wax can be a lifesaver. It helps make your braces more comfortable and easier to adjust to during the initial period of treatment. Once you put it on, the wax covers any sharp edges of the braces and holds any loose parts in place. This creates a barrier between your braces and your teeth, making them feel less intrusive. Dental wax can also be used as a quick fix for mouth sores until you can see your orthodontist.

Dental wax is easy to apply and remove, making it a great choice for both kids and adults. Plus, it is really affordable, so it is easy on your wallet as well.

How to Apply Dental Wax

To ensure a bacteria-free environment, start by washing your hands thoroughly prior to cleaning your teeth. This simple step can help prevent any potential bacterial infections. Always ensure your braces are well-dried. Identify any areas inside your cheeks or lips where the wires or brackets of the braces are causing discomfort. Take a small amount of wax and roll it into a ball between your fingers for about 5 seconds to soften it. Then, place this small ball of wax onto the painful area, gently rubbing it to create a barrier between the braces and your mouth. Allow the dental wax some time to soothe your discomfort, and you can have a great experience with your braces.
