The chances of getting periodontal diseases are higher for people with diabetes. Periodontal disease is a disease that causes infections in the gum and the jawbone. This can lead to pain, bad breath, and chewing problems. If left untreated it can lead to tooth loss, hence, it is fair to say that diabetes can cause tooth loss if left for a long time. Diabetes can also slow down healing for people with underlying periodontal diseases.

Other oral problems related to diabetes

Diabetes can also cause fungal infections like thrush in the mouth. Thrush is an infection that causes pain and white patches in your mouth. Moreover, diabetes causes dry mouth. This happens when you lack saliva in your mouth. Saliva is responsible for keeping your mouth wet and washing away the bacteria responsible for cavities. Dry mouth causes soreness, ulcers, and tooth decay. In addition, diabetes can increase the level of sugar in your saliva causing more problems in your mouth.

Symptoms

Diabetes patients are advised to keep tabs on their oral health. That is, they are to check their mouth regularly for any problems. The gums might appear swollen and bleed when you brush. It might also appear as soreness and white patches, other times it might cause a bad taste in the mouth. All these are valid reasons for you to visit the dentist for guidance.
