Jaw problems are often caused by dental occlusions. Dental occlusion is another name for the process through which your jaws meet when you bite. If your jaws are in the wrong position, the muscles that move the jaw have to work harder, which can make them tired. That leads to muscle spasms and continuous headaches or migraines, often experienced in the morning. You might also experience pain behind your eyes and around your neck and shoulders. That makes it a very interesting topic of study, so read on to learn more.
What Is a TMJ Headache?
This is a disorder that causes pain in the temporomandibular joint that connects the jawbone to the skull. This pain often spreads upward toward the other areas of the head.
Symptoms
Someone who is suffering from a TMJ headache may have pain that is commonly in the ear area and the temples by the eyes. Moreover, you might experience pain and difficulty while chewing food. The headache at this point gets severe while chewing. You might also have difficulties when it comes to opening your mouth fully. Jaw sounds may be heard when you move the jaw. These sounds are popping sounds that are associated with soreness in the jaw hinges. You might also have a swollen face and sensitive teeth that do not seem to be due to any specific dental problem.
Causes
Some of the issues that cause TMJ disorders and pain include misalignment of the jaws, causing malocclusion. They might also be caused by dislocation on the jaw joint, causing teeth grinding (bruxism). If you have experienced joint damage or injury in the past, such as a blow or impact, you might also experience TMJ headaches. With age, arthritis might catch up with you. Arthritis and osteoarthritis can cause TMJ dislocations and damage to the jaw. For treatment purposes, give us a call.
