What Are The Types Of Dental Sedation That Dentists Use?
Posted on 1/23/2023 by Dick Hikade, DDS
When a dentist uses sedation, it helps shorten the amount of time it would take to complete a dental procedure. When a patient is restless and worried about pain, they disrupt the dentist, delaying the treatment time. Since sedation makes a patient to be calm and relaxed, a procedure can go on uninterrupted, hence, allowing the dentist to complete it in time.
Sedation dentistry also allows dentists to undertake multiple dental treatments during one appointment. Besides, it helps patients keep up with their appointment since they no longer have to fear things like needles, forceps, dental drills, and tooth elevators.
Types of Sedation
Different kinds of sedations are available in a dentist's office. They are used based on the procedure and the type of patient.
Laughing Gas
It is the most common and is usually inhaled via a nose mask. Once you breathe it, oxygen to the brain and blood is prevented, causing you the giggles you experience.
Oral Sedation
Another type of sedation known as oral conscious sedation involves a dentist giving you a sedative in pill form, usually about an hour prior to receiving the procedure. For pediatric dentistry, a dentist may use liquid sedation. Oral sedation keeps you feeling groggy and you could fall asleep. However, you can still communicate with the dentist.
Intravenous Sedation
IV sedation is a deeper type of conscious sedation. It is delivered directly to the bloodstream via an IV line. A dentist will have to monitor your oxygen levels, blood pressure, and heart rate. IV sedation makes you fall asleep with little or no memory of your procedure once you wake up. It is preferred for patients needing multiple procedures or those with severe dental anxiety.
